Flyboys
This "based on a true story" war movie is
okay. Flyboys is
not a stellar movie, but its not bad either. Let's say it's just typical
Hollywood entertainment flair.
It is a story worth telling, that of a small group
of Americans who volunteered in advance of the United States entry into the war,
to help the Allied cause. Flying the new-fangled machines, which, as one
character even remarks, made it from recent invention into war machine very
rapidly.
One thing that was quite
irritating in the movie: all, or nearly all, of the German fighters depicted
were the Fokker triplanes, ala the Red Baron's plane. And while, yes, that was
a famous plane, not that many of them saw action, and I doubt there were whole
squadrons of them, much less whole squadrons of red ones! There was a lot more
variety of German planes in the war, and it would have be interesting, and more
realistic, to see more of them. Apparently, the choice of an all-German,
all-triplane, all-the-time was done after (?) audience testing, so that the
movie goer could easily determine which plane was on which side during the
twisted, confusing dogfights. If so, that's pandering to the audiences, for
sure.
Otherwise, there was a lot of
attention paid to detail in this movie. Civilian dress was especially detailed
and interesting.
Entertaining movie.
Like I said, not great, but if you want to while away a few hours, go for
it.
