The Wicker Man

What rubbish. What possessed Hollywood to make this movie? Definitely put this on your "never-to-see" list.

We went to the movies last night as part of our anniversary celebration. Yes, Connie and I have been married 23 years now. We chose this movie simply because Nicholas Cage was in it. Had really read nothing more about the movie other than that.

And, I won't knock Cage at all; he's a fine actor, put into a bad film (why, though, did he choose it?!). This movie suffered from bad dialogue, poor editing, predictable plot, numerous plot holes, unbelievability, and plot predictability. I'm sure a lot of the actors, especially Ellen Burstyn, as chief goddess as this island, who had to deliver a "I'm a witch, and its good"-type of lines. Half-way through the film, I'm starting to ask myself "why did they make this film?", and guessed that it must be some remake. And, now checking on IMDB, I discover that yes, indeed, it is a remake. Apparently, of a very good British movie.

But this remake is garbage. It's not at all a super-scary, creepy horror movie that will scare the bejeebs out of you, so its got no attraction to the teenage drone audience; and its not an intellectually-creepy movie with a theme, once revealed, that'll send creepy shivers down your spine (like the classic Soylent Green , or one of my favorites in this vein, Boys from Brazil). Instead, it's just stupid, clumsy horror. The audience started laughing, like myself, at some of the dialogue delivered: "Get off that bike, or I'll shoot you", police officer Cage barks at a school teacher on her bicycle. What the heck?! Then there's Cage walking around in a bear costume. It was kind of funny, though, when he started to slug a lot of the women in the face. But, I don't think they intended this as a comedy.

Maybe I'll watch the original someday. Netflix, you got this one?
