Blue Man Group

Coincidentally, Blue Man Group came to town on the same day as my birthday! I've seen their Boston show twice, and it's always a lot of fun, so I thought it would be a blast to arrange a birthday party group to go see their touring "How to Be a Megastar 2.0" show.

Alas, I was too late to get tickets ...

... without thinking too much about it, I hadn't checked for ticket sales until 5 days after sales opened. By then, all the good seats were taken; the only seats available were way up high, in the vast Toyota Center. Blue Man Group's Boston stage is a small, intimate affair, but even their second level seats seem to far away. What would one need from the second or third level at the Toyota Center, binoculars?!

So, I tossed aside my hopes; gonna have to do something else for my birthday.

But then, come birthday week, and Yvette gives me a surprise call: "Dad, guess what? I've got tickets to the Blue Man Group!". She was so sweet. She had put on a concerted effort to find tickets, checking on eBay, and other sales sights, then finally resorted to just driving by Toyota Center to find some individuals re-selling their tickets. Mind you, not scalpers, as the prices were the same as the official ticket price. I guess they just decided to not go.

Anyway, they were good seats -- not on the floor, but still close-by, in a first-level section close to the stage.

So, Friday evening the whole family was a lovely dinner at Tafia (delicious!), and then Yvette and I hop the train to go downtown (Connie's not really in to watching such "modern" stuff).

How to Be a Megastar 2.0 is different from the regular stage act in Boston or New York. It's more of a music performance, intended for a larger audience. However, it has many references to their regular show, and while less interactive, still provides many opportunities for audience participation. Of course, it's humorous, and thoughtful, and cool. I liked some of the new visual tricks they employed. Yvette played around with an interactive text messaging feature they included, as an aside, to the show, and had fun with that as well. She really enjoyed the show.

So did Tracy, one of my friends. Coincidentally, one of her friends had gotten a couple of tickets to the show too; she called me before it started, "where are you sitting? Can you see me? I'm waving!!!" Well, we couldn't pinpoint each other, but after the show we did rendezvous, and walked over to Sambuca, a jazz bar. There, they gave me a surprise birthday cake (how sweet!), and after a few drinks we headed over to Té; surprisingly, it was already closed (12:30 am)!!! Connie said it was absolutely dead that night (of course ... all the tea drinkers in town were watching the Blue Man Group!), so she was able to close quickly and headed home right before we arrived. But hey, I have keys, so I treated Tracy and friend to some quiche and Ying Yang; they needed some jolting up before the long drive home :)

Maybe this was supposed to be some kind of landmark birthday year for me. Well, I still feel like I'm in my 30s, so things are still the same. Certainly, though, I'll remember this birthday as something special. All in all, it was a nice evening.
