For Whom the Bell Tolls

Continuing my Spanish Civil War trend , I picked up Hemingway's exceptional novel at the newly opened McGovern Stella Link Library (which, by the way, is a remarkable building and an excellent facility) in our neighborhood, and polished it off in a few days. I had forgotten how entertaining of a writer Hemingway was.

He certainly knows how to tell an adventure story. It started out a bit slow, but soon I was hooked, captivated by the story line and the richly-developed characters, with the doom of the bridge always lurking in the background. This is a very personal novel, as it doesn't paint a broad historical picture of the Spanish Civil War, but you certainly do get hints as to the wider conflict and players involved.

And, I was stunned, absolutely stunned, by how the novel ended. It was like pulling a tension wire tight, camera focused closely on the vibrating wire ... and then fade to black.

Wow.
