The Kite Runner

Was given this book as a Christmas present, and just finished it. Overall, a profound, sad book.

Gave a great glimpse into pre-chaos Afghanistan (before Russia entered), and the turmoil ever since. Told in the first person perspective, by an Afghani who becomes an author, it was so well-written that I was convinced it was auto-biographical until well past halfway mark, when something written finally made me check the jacket cover - "oh, this is not his fourth novel (as was the character in the book), but his first."

Some of the story became melodramatic (I won't give anything away by mentioning just what), but overall, the book impacted me. Gave me a new, personal, understanding of one slice of modern Afghanistan.
