PROGRAMS AT BRIARWOOD

SIP | ELD | Title 1 | GATE | Computers | SST | Special Education Services |
P. E. | Day Care | Classrooms

Specially funded programs are those which provide additional support and resources for the basic school programs. Some are designed for all students; other address those with specific needs. The School Site Council (which includes our Bilingual Advisory Committee) is the umbrella parent advisory group which helps oversee these programs.

panda paw SIP (School Improvement Program):

These funds support improvement efforts school wide, staff development in a variety of areas, and student achievement for all students.

panda paw ELD (English Language Development):

The goal of this program is to enable students to develop fluency in English as effectively and efficiently as possible. The program is designed to help children make the transition from their native language to English and develop skills required to succeed academically. Translators in the major language groups are available to help translate for parents and children. Call Mrs. Kanani, ELD Facilitator, with any questions (423.1368).

This program provides supplemental instruction and assistance to improve students' language arts and math achievement. Participation is based upon teacher recommendation, and often includes a before-school component.

panda paw GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)

Gifted students are identified in third and fourth grade. The classroom teachers have been trained to provide a challenging environment where curiosity, imagination, and exploration are encouraged.

panda paw COMPUTER LAB AND COMPUTERS

A computer lab with thirty-three iMac computers and laser printers is available for all classrooms to use. Third, fourth, and fifth graders attend weekly sessions to learn keyboarding and word processing skills. In addition, all classrooms have computers; the type and number varies from classroom to classroom. Briarwood has a plan to promote equity, tech support, and training for teachers.

SST (Student Study Team):

The SST meets regularly (usually weekly) to review individual student concerns or problems. Students are referred by teachers or by parents. The team discusses strategies for helping students experience success in school. Members of the SST include: principal, parents, resource specialist, special education teachers, psychologist, school nurse, classroom teachers, and the referring teacher. Parents and student input are a vital part of this process. The SST is the gateway to programs for students with special needs, and to limited counseling services for students and other programs here at Brairwood and in the district.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES

A variety of services are available for students with identified special needs. These include:

~ RSP (Resource Specialist Program) - a regular supplemental program which addresses specific and identified leaning needs under the direction of the RSP teachers.

~ Speech - a program which provides help in speech and language development under the direction of the speech and language teacher.

~ Special Day Class - a program for students with specific learning needs beyond the scope of the RSP program.

~ Other Programs - programs exist in the district for students with other serious physical, emotional, or learning difficulties.
