Faktura Gallery presents Anthony Mangicapra's Solo Exhibition

opening Friday November 11, 2005 7-Midnight

Miami – October 2005 – Faktura Gallery presents Anthony Mangicapra in his first solo show at Faktura Gallery. A predominant force in Miami's avant-guarde art scene, Mangicapra is most well known for his collaboration with the Dirty Detroit Show. On the eve of Art Basel 2005, Johnston invites the artist to explore his Somnanbulant Art through the artistic freedom and progressive critical art theory that Faktura demands from its exhibitions. Not unrelated to Johnston's views on artwork, advertising and visual lexography, Mangicapra's solo show is an event to be remembered, because it brings the very notion of memory and experience into the present.

Oracles & Atavisms defines the concepts of the creative process of painting, performance, the subconscious, the ancient concepts of intrinsic meanings, automatism and ritual in order to push the public's preconceptions of such terms into an all-inclusive sound and visual installation.

Mangicapra explains, “automatism and the principals of Ritual have led to what I've termed "Somnambulant Art," a series of integrated automatic images, both pictorial and "sigil" in form, executed with a chance stroke. The automatism with which it is created breathes a life all its own into each work. The artist allows the currents of this state to guide both mind and body. It is the randomness, not unlike that of a Tarot spread, which allows the works to manifest themselves through the hands of the artist. I intend these works to serve not only in an aesthetic sense, but also as the tools of meditative divination for the viewer. As reading a book twice gives different personal insight upon subsequent reads, so shall the works created cause different thoughts and ideas to arise within each viewer. The images do not change over time.  The viewer is different, if only slightly, at the time of each viewing.”

FAKTURA GALLERY is founded on the belief that current technological revolutions in communication of mechanical reproduction have blurred lines between experimental and exceptional artistic production. Faktura is proud to present Oracles & Atavisms. The show includes new paintings, musical accompaniment by Hoor-paar-Kraat, and an interactive installation with scrying mirrors and a ritual chamber.
