Spilt over Sugar, Crushed under Foot
In a city filled with groups of artists whose work taste the same,
Manigicapra and Hosein throw caution aside to venture
into the creation of singularly captivating works of art.

Miami – May 2006 – Faktura Gallery presents all new work by Anthony Mangicapra and Duane Hosein. This collection of over 50 new works explores the century old image of artist inspired by alcohol. From the 19th century fascination with the “illuminati” artists guided by the green glow of absinthe to the aura of the alcohol-driven, often deadly, creativity woven around characters like Pollock, Spilt over Sugar, Crushed under Foot explores the continuing correlation in theory, myth and practice.
In Manigicapra's second exhibition at Faktura Gallery he returns with a collection of hand-held sized works about artist and wine and its evolution through the ages from communal to the Bacchanalian and all points between. Mangicapra becomes a painter who revels in his medium as though he were creating a fine bottle of wine. He focuses on the life within each bottle as compared to the life of each individual work. He explains, “A bottle of wine will taste different if it's opened on a different day. A piece of art, critically or leisurely viewed, at a different period in time, can and will give the viewer a completely different feeling.”
Hosein's new work focuses on the mythic importance of absinthe to artistic production be it visual or literary. Arguably the most ethereal and beloved of the romanticized alcoholic artists are those turn of the century dwellers in absinthe bars. Duane's new work immerses the viewer in his own interpretation of the very spirit of that eternal pastis, absinthe. The resulting work is a grim yet quirky study in the massive and concentrated culture surrounding an elixir that, in it's day, simply was.
The myth: artist inspired by drink. The act: the artist creating while drinking. The cultural ideology: the drink unleashes great creativity. The consumption: the viewers of art at openings often come for the drink.
By continuing with Faktura Gallery's tradition of being acutely aware of the influences of the environment on art viewer ship, Spilt over Sugar, Crushed under Foot will explore the sort of experiential relativity Mangicapra speaks of by creating an environment that is self aware of the most basic standard in art openings: the presence of free booze.
