Pimp My Kart is NOT for the Faint of Heart
CALL FOR PIMPS 2007
For PMK 07 I would like to stress that this is a projekt more resolutely located on the fringes of the norm than any other art projekt during Art Basel Miami Beach. For the third installment of this endeavor, I am looking for a SMALL but extremely committed group of artists who understand that there is a huge rift between contemporary artistic motivations. Large art fairs proclaim an air of authoritative reign over the public perception of the potentiality of art and its monetary increase. For as long as there has been visual communication there has been the questions: is art for communication? for the "people"? for education of the illiterate? is it to serve as the philistine act of the rich to lend it for the viewership of the less endowed? or is art to serve as trophies for the wealthy elite who can physically possess it?
Pimp My Kart has always raised questions of wealth and class in relation to contemporary art, asking the selective group of world level art aesthetes to keep an eye on concepts beyond the pristine autonomous white walls of galleries and convention centers.
This year, PMK will hold true to the century old call to artists to illustrate concepts to those unable to learn from the traditional methods of cultural enlightenment. Braininess painters were bequeathed the responsibility of using visual means to communicate the stories of the Bible to the illiterate masses, so shall we this year bear the responsibility to visually illustrate issues seemingly illegible to more elaborately funded art connoisseurs: the rampant poverty in Miami, the use of poor neighborhoods by large art fairs who take the space because of cheap rent but ignore the lives of the people surrounding the exteriors, the reality and cruelty of a life of sacrifice many artists must endure in order for just one hope of a glimpse of the global magnifying lens of Basel, the strife of production rarely revealed in the final piece, the displacement of artists due to developers and raised rent in affordable studio locations.
The poor are rarely blind to the social demands of the wealthy. And yet do the wealthy see the needs of their fellow humans so clearly? Why then is the festival of ART, the purest form of visual communication, not harnessed for its potential to reveal at least some of these issues to those less inclined to the experience.
PMK 07 aims to help us all see what only art may let us visualize.
To be a PIMP this year, this is what you will need
As in 2006, these is an artist contract that must be signed as your official Intent to Participate.
You will be welcome to participate in all press materials, the earlier pics and statements are received, the more they will be included.
All artists, individual or in teams, are required to acquire an abandoned shopping kart and use it to create their work of art. Preferably the piece will retain its portability, as artists will be required to move their karts.
All artists are responsible for the transportation of their own karts, help will be arranged as needed.
The "show" consists of a 48 hour period during Basel. All participating artists must be willing to give 48 consecutive hours to the projekt. Details will be disclosed to official Pimp prospective artists only.
For more information, all questions welcome: holla

The following are some old emails from last year. Some MAJOR confusion incurred last year between the artists, because not everyone was reading all the info. So if you don't like actually reading about the show you are participate in, this is NOT the show for you.

Official PMK email # 2
For a greater understanding of Pimk My Kart, here are some email correspondence about previous shows.
Hope this email finds all my PIMPS in GREAT shape for the insanity that is quickly closing in upon us! The flyer wil probably go to print tomorrow... so if anyone wants to add any last minute logos or info I will need that info tonight. Once I finish it I will send you all the jpegs to start promoting online.
I am also including a copy of the original email I sent, for the few of you that didn't get that one, and the other few of you that never read it, since you've been asking me about stuff that's included on there LOL...
The schedule is being finalized now. I have had to make a couple of changes, and I'm still waiting to hear about the music we've booked.
If ANYONE needs a kart remind me this week or forever hold your peace!!
IMPORTANT!! One of our pimps is making license plates for all the karts, so each individual kart and/or group of artists making a kart together need to let me know what you want your plate to say. you have up to about 8 spaces....
Hmmm.... what else... I think that's it for tonight. I'll send out the jpegs as soon as they're ready. Holla back if ya have any more questions or concerns.
G'nite
Jacqi Brown
AND DON'T FORGET TO STOP BY ON SATURDAY FOR FAKTURA'S AFTER ART WALK PARTY/ CLOSING PARTY FOR M IS FOR MIAMI.
SATURDAY THE 11TH 8-1AM
...............................................................................................................................................................................
THE OLD EMAIL>>> Which doesn't reflect the new list so don't panic
The time has come, the list is almost completed...
Congratulations! You are this year's group of FAKTURA PIMPS!! I am going to use this email address, to keep things more organized... but as always you can reach me at ANY of my emails, kiwi4fun@mac.com, jacquelyn@fakturagallery.com or thedopearedealer@gmail.com. And if you ever need me ASAP, email me at my phone, faktura@tmail.com (that one is kinda a secret, so don't spread it around LOL)
On to business.
The KARTS
Most of you already have your karts. I am delivering to Rosaria and Orlando on Friday afternoon. I am getting a large metal one for Eddy asap. If anyone else needs help finding a kart, let me know so I can go hunting again. NOTE: there are some legalities to kart possession, I HIGHLY recommend removing all corporate identification from your karts as soon as you get them to avoid any potential problems. We only ran into one problem last year, but Angela was able to argue her way out of it by explaining about PMK.
The FLYER
Please check through the list of names and make sure I have it spelled correctly, and it is listed as you want it to appear on the flyer. Whatever I have in parenthesis is just for my personal notes. I will be designing the flyers early next week, and will let you all know when they are ready. If anyone has any designs/ pics/ sketches or ideas they would like considered for the front, let me know asap (I know I know, if I type asap one more time I'm going to bust, but time is of the essence and I want to get that across LOL)
The STICKERS
Some of us have already begun putting stickers up all over town, if you haven't gotten any stickers yet let me know and I'll get some to you.
The PRESS KITS
I invite everyone to submit statements, anecdotes and pics to be included in the press packets. For those who don't know me, it's the insanity of my press kits that often get us a LOT of attention. I need high res pics or scans of sketches this weekend, for some of the magazine people who are already hounding me like you wouldn't believe- a VERY good sign. I will write another email next week filling you in on everything that will be going in it, and it's gonna be nuts!
The EMAIL/PRESS LIST
Unfortunately I am still waiting for some computer genius to recover my beloved email list off of my dead powerbook... so if you would like to add some of you contacts to the PMK mailing list, please send them along.
The PRESS
So far we have: a photo and write up in SPIN. A review in Miami Art Guide. We're on the list in Art in America. And that's just so far!!
The ART in some KARTS
For those of you who are combining you karts with other art projekts for Basel, that is awesome. Artists who will be selling art out of their karts are asked to donate 30% of their sales toward the cause... Jacqi Brown, for example, will be dealing out of her PIMP Dope Art Mobile!
The TOUR and PERFOMATIVITY
The schedule of events is as follows so far, and will be finalized next week:
Tuesday Dec 5th: Opening at Faktura Gallery
Wed. Dec 6: Wynwood Wednesday- karts around Wynwood. Night event at Bullfrog Eatz with live music
Thu. Dec 7: ?? Probably the BEACH
Friday Dec 8: Coral Gables Art Walk
Saturday Dec 9: Design District BLOW OUT!!
Letter to two artists from PMK 06
This is in response to two artists who were upset that a silken reproduction included on a mixed media collage made by Jacqi Brown to promote PMK 06 through her Dope Art.
5-29-07
Hey
I wanted to check in and tell you that I should be able to redo that pic on the site today. Its my first day off since we spoke and I wanted to ensure you I had not forgotten about it. I also wanted to say that I felt very weird about what you said. It was clearly stated in all pmk docs that reproductions of artist work would be used in promotion of the show. Further, the dope arts that you are referring to were the ones that were given away when people brought in the "free dope art" vouchers that were sent out in the media kits. The dope art was made out of collaged silkscreened images of the show, printed on top of the newtimes article about pmk. The pieces were entirely appropriated from images of the show, used entirely for the promotion of the show. No offense was intended toward any of the artists, and I am truly sorry for two things: that you felt that I wronged you; and that you felt you could not immediately say something to me about it. I really felt like this was something you both had already thought about for a long time, and were set in your resolve about it, not willing to even listen to my response.
I realize that certain artists had preconceptions about how pmk was going to work. What I am disappointed by is that so few artists who did not know me previously did not understand what this show and faktura is about. This was a space, entirely run and paid for, by a young girl with a dream of bringing awesome avant guarde style shows to miami that might not find a home anywhere else in the city. It was about the art, at any cost to myself. I worked 5~6 night a week bartending just to pay for the rent and utilities, not to mention the flyers, the promotional materials, the screws, screwdrivers, nails and hammers. I built that place from nothing, with only the money drunk people at the bar found in their wallets to give me. I had no one working for me, practically no money coming in (I sold three works in two year) and a will to make it work no matter what. Every artist that ever worked w me knew or soon found out this was not a gallery, this was a space that put on art shows that directly reflected the work of me and the artist. For pmk I had great dreams of team work, some of which fell threw and some of which came together beautifully. The octopus building being open for example worked great, thank you. But the nightmare of transporting the karts there, stuffing 200+ mailers, cleaning the space, hanging the show, painting the floor, and everything else fell squarely on my list of things I was responsible for. This is why the website took a while to get finished. This is why there was no one at the warehouse when my grandmother got sick, and why most everything was attacked by rats or suffered flood damage. Keeping a space up and running that is not fit for human or animal dwelling takes an enormous amount of work every day. And after over two years of sacrificing my life and all my hard earned money for an alternative art space I have grown very tired of people not seeing it for what I wished it would be seen as.
I am heart broken. I am completely heartbroken that now I can add to my list of things people found wrong with the one thing I poured more of myself into than any other venture in my life, an accusation of stealing an image from one of the artists.
It makes me fondly remember Warhol and smile.
Good luck with all that you two do in the future, may you be fortunate to find people as good and passionate about art as myself to work with in the future, and may you be a little more understanding and open when you need to clarify a wrong you believe done to you. Take care.
