FAKTURA PETS ARE THE EXTRAORDINARY SURVIVORS

OF A WORLD TOO CAUGHT UP IN BRAND NAMES

"Hi, we have a small problem"

MISSION STATEMENT

Faktura Pet Projekt is a section of Faktura Projekts, an artist run nonprofit. As one of the Faktura Projekts, the specific objectives and purposes of this project shall be to utilize the arts to enhance the community by raising awareness, funds, and support for the rescue of stray pets.

Through unique and innovative shows, fundraisers, street performance, and canine rescue & rehabilitation our goal is to raise social awareness in the public and in the art world.   We strive to bring together creative individuals interested in changing in their urban surroundings/environment through art.

Faktura Projekts challenges the trend in art and other groups to create autonomous communities that focus only on self-fulfilling issues. Faktura Projekt artists reach out the community at large, to bring art and social awareness to new audiences.

Faktura Pet Projekt provides food, shelter, veterinary care, spay/neuter services, behavioral rehabilitation, and lots of love to the abandoned dogs of Little Haiti, St. Mary's Art District and the surrounding areas.

Faktura Pet Projekt exclusively rescues dogs of all sizes, breeds, shapes and temperaments that have suffered the misfortune of surviving alone on the streets of a metropolitan city. We tailor our services to each new rescue, and do everything in our power to meet the special medical or personality needs of every new member of the Faktura family.

We will, on rare occasion, also rescue kittens. Though due to the number of stray dogs in this neighborhood, our encounter with friendly felines is fairly rare.

Faktura Pet Education Outreach Projekt

Due to a lack of Pet Education many canines in low income neighborhoods in Miami are abandoned once they are 'broken,' a term used by our neighbor to describe his puppy after being kicked too hard for messing up inside the house. He then gave us the ‘broken' puppy, find her story: Latisha Mae.

When a dog is subject to street elements without protection they suffer from fleas, ticks, mange and skin infection, heartworm, ehrlichia, flu, bordatella, worms, the list is endless.

Working in the Faktura Gallery space, Pet Projekts provides food, shelter, veterinary care, spay/neuter services, behavioral rehabilitation, and lots of love to the abandoned dogs of St. Mary's Art District and beyond.

Faktura Pet Projekt offers the community a unique service:

Faktura Pet Projekt is different from every other animal rescue group in the tri-county area because we focus solely on the rescue and rehabilitation of dogs that have been living on the streets. These dogs are usually picked up by Animal Services, where they have little chance of being adopted before being put to sleep. The facilities at Animal Services are extremely limited, and if a stray dog has any health or behavior problem, the dog is not given a chance for recovery.

Most other rescue groups focus only on specific breeds, or on the care of dogs that are surrendered by owners. The Humane Society only takes dogs that have been cared for, and even then only accept pets randomly, most of the time turning people away saying their facilities are at capacity.

There are no programs in Miami that target the rescue of street dogs specifically, and it is generally the fate of a street dog to slip through the cracks of the system. Even when a good Samaritan tries to rescue a street dog, more often than not the person can find no shelter willing to take a chance on a street rescue.

Faktura Pet Projekt is committed to filling this gap in pet rescue. Johnston has the experience and ability to take even the most difficult cases and turn them around, through medical treatment, training and a lot of love. Andrea Seamans, a seasoned rescuer and long time volunteer in many rescue groups in South Florida, joins Johnston to help Faktura Pet Projekt reach even more pets in need.

With training, love and a LOT of food, these dogs can be successfully brought back to physical and emotional health. The methods we use at Faktura Pet Projekts are a lot like Art Therapy for children, we encourage the dogs to express themselves in non-destructive ways, to play with a wide range of other pets and people, and to learn to trust their new owners.

We have enjoyed a huge success rate, and hope to continue to develop our rescue organization over the coming years with the generous help of donations and volunteers.

Some statistics to think about:

The average rate of successfully placing street dogs, as reported by Animal Services of Dade on Animal Planet, is 1 in 5 dogs. Faktura Projekts has managed to care for 25 dogs over the past year, and of those 25 only three have not found permanent happy homes. Our techniques are working, and we hope to continue to grow and use art to educate the community about the responsibilities we have as a community to care for and respect even the most abused and abandoned pets in our city.

In Miami-Dade, the Humane Society reports that there are 15 puppies and 45 kittens born for every human being born. These odds work against pets from the moment they enter the world and is another example of the importance of educating people about spay and neutering.

From Art to Pet Rescue:

As a conceptual art projekt, we are using this opportunity to sharpen our marketing skills, an indispensable part of becoming an artist in a visual world dominated by advertising, to help educate the community about the stray pet problem and by helping the stray pets recover from their lives as abandoned street dwellers to find loving adopters.
