 ABOUT

DEDICATED TO

Faktura Pet Projekt is founded in the memory of Big Boy, Lucky, and Georgie. May their souls forever smile down on all of little street dogs fortunate enough to find their ways into our hearts.

It is our hope that we will soon be able to gain enough support to be able to prevent any further cruelty like these examples, through our rescues and through wide public education.

ABOUT FAKTURA PET PROJEKT

Faktura Pet Projekt is the oldest non-profit project initiated by the Faktura group of artists. After opening Faktura Gallery in Little Haiti, a low-income area near downtown Miami, the stray pet population came to the immediate attention of gallery owner Jacquelyn Jackson Johnston. She invited the first abandoned street dog into her gallery in May 2005, which inspired a photographic art exhibition by Johnston in June 2005. This exhibition used photography to raise awareness about the untimely deaths of many stray pets’ in Miami and the exhibition caught the attention of local press. (See attached article, “Pup Art” about Johnston’s rescue efforts). For the artists of Faktura Projekts, pet rescue is an everyday activity. Every artist, board member or just passive participant, is constantly aware of the issues facing the growing number of abandoned pets living on the street of Miami. At any given moment, our group is fostering, either in private foster homes or in the gallery with Johnston, any where from 3 to 15 rescue dogs or cats. Each rescue receives daily attention, training and medical treatment where necessary. Andrea Seamans acts as our official Rescue Liaison and oversees all adoptions. The entire network of artists helps in spreading the word about adoption and pet owner responsibility. The funding for each rescued pet varies. The first year the board members donated everything from their personal income: housing, food and medical treatment. After non-profit incorporation in March 2006, Faktura Projekts began receiving public donations from public events as well as some larger donations from individuals who become aware of the group’s activities. All expenses are documented in detail and receipts and vet bills are kept for every rescue case.

HISTORY

Faktura Pet Projekt began the day Faktura Gallery moved in, because it was that day in February 2005 that owner and artist Jacquelyn Jackson Johnston first saw this big boy's sad face.

Big Boy received treatment for mange, and had come to trust us enough to let him pet him, although he was still too frightened to come inside. Unfortunately, Big Boy was run over across from Miami Edison High School only weeks from the end of his treatment. His body laid there for over six weeks.

Georgie, another dog being treated for sever mange and eye infections, was almost ready to be brought into the gallery when someone decided to feed her antifreeze and throw her body into the neighbor's dumpster. (We never even got a picture of Georgie!)

Lucky was found on June 30 2005, she was about 5 months old. She was severely dehydrated and emaciated, but improved daily with the help of a loving foster home and health help from the Humane Society. Lucky was very shy around people, a born and raised member of the local cattle dog meets "puerto rican pot licker" dog clan of Little Haiti. Jacquelyn found her weakness, however, and managed to catch her by sharing her lunch with her... a boiled egg!

Jacquelyn writes:

Lucky became my baby. I found her about a month after I found her sister, Dottie. I fell in love, as did Phluffy, and so we decided to keep her.

I quit smoking to be able to afford to keep her and pay for all of her necessary vet bills. So Lucky is named lucky because we are lucky for each other, she gives me a reason to work through my urges, and she's lucky cause then she gets about $4 worth of treats and medicine a day!

Lucky was a krazy little dog. She was very over protective of me at the dog park! And as small as she was, about 25 pounds, she could out run Phluffy every time. She had enough energy to power a small town.

I decided to keep Lucky as my third social worker dog, to have a small, medium and large pup to help me with new rescues. She was my baby, and a dear member of my family.

Unfortunately, all of the training was not enough to stop her impulsive instincts, and I was not able to stop her from jumping out of my car and running out in front of a green SUV. The experience was excruciating, the details of which I will not describe here. If I can, I may later tell the whole story, so that others can remember to tell their dogs they love them every day, and never over-estimate your control over their behavior. TAKE PRECAUTIONS! Always watch them carefully when moving in and out of cars and doors. Get them micro chipped. Always have them on a leash. Work with them on commands like Stay and Come. And most of all, love them dearly and tell them so every day.
