Victorian Beauty

I was in Mountain View the other day at Shoreline Park, and discovered this amazing old victorian mansion. It was build ca. 1867 and is the oldest house in Mountain View. It was built by Henry Rengstorff, a German immigrant to California, lured by the Gold Rush. He came too late (1850) to strike it rich from the Gold Rush, but worked at a number of jobs until he was granted squatters rights to 290 acres of land in San Jose. He ran cattle, planted fruit trees, and raised hay and grain in various locations in the South Bay Area. In 1864 he purchased 164 acres that now is part of Shoreline Park in Mountain View and built this house there.

The house was occupied by the Rengstorff family until about 1950, after which it was sold outside the family and changed hands several times. It fell into decay and finally was sold to the City of Mountain View. The City moved it to its present location and restored it. It is now a museum and is also rented out for meetings.
