Kimberly Landers, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, attended Florida State University and received a Bachelor's degree in Studio art in 1993 and her Masters degree in Art Education in 1994. Returning to Atlanta, she taught public school for eleven years. Five years were spent teaching elementary art in southwest Dekalb County. The last six years were spent at Chamblee Charter High School, a Georgia and National School of Excellence. Teaching high school art was a major motivational factor in the production of work. While she encouraged her students to participate in competitions and exhibitions she continued to create works of art, working on commissions and selling work through word of mouth. Her work was frequently showcased in the Dekalb County Faculty/Student Exhibit. After forming an art club with a group of friends she began a new body of work. Teaching across the hall from the anatomy teacher and drawing from life experiences the Metaphoric Anatomy series was born. The work features realistic depictions of human anatomy used to symbolize the emotions of the artist. Her sketchbook/journaling technique manifested itself in these pieces, rich with passion, personal struggle and triumph. In 2005 this body of work was accepted for display at the Inman Park Art Festival. It was this experience that pushed her towards leaving education for the pursuit of a career as an artist. Since then she has had several pieces in exhibits in local art galleries and cafés (dooGallery, Defoor Center, MINT, Steinbeck's Oyster Bar). In general, her work is characterized with intense expressionism, vivid color, rich texture and often a whimsical peek into the life of the artist. |
