Dressed in period costume, and
utilizing his resonating bass-baritone, LeCount Holmes recreates
the life and times of one of America's finest orators, educators
and most prolific African American historical figures.
"I was born on February
the 15th, 1817. My birthgiven name was Frederick Augustus Washington
Bailey. My mother, whom I only knew for a short while of my life,
was a slave. My father, whom I never knew, was a white man. You
see to me my mother was a mystery...and my father was a myth.
...We create our present by the influences of our past. Our past
has been created and it can never ever be erased...."
"What I wanted most as
a boy was...to learn how to read. The wife of the man who claimed
he owned me, secretly taught me how to read. I can recall that
day so vividly when Mr. Ald walked through the door and noticed
that his wife was teaching me how to read--had been teaching
me for a year. He slammed the door and he said 'You can't
teach no colored how to read! Not in my house! ..Not ever in
my house!'
...But he was too
late. By that time I had
already learned enough to keep teaching myself!"
Mr. Holmes offers this powerful
motivational workshop, helping participants to achieve their
own personal best potential --based on the principals of self-help,
awareness and pride as embraced by Frederick Douglass. Read an excerpt
from his manuscript.
