Biography
A native of Sandersville, Georgia,
Kenya King began singing at the early age of seven. She sang
throughout her youth and teenage years and was a member of the
gospel trio, The Voice Tones. The group experienced much success
and was featured on shows with other popular gospel artists such
as The Williams Brothers and Rev F.C. Barnes with Rev. Janice
Brown. Kenya soon became a well-known talent and role model in
her community. Following Kenya's success with The Voice Tones, she began singing jingles and recording vocals for commercials. She also sang background vocals on many album projects, including the album for former R&B star and now gospel icon, Candi Staten. In the 90s Kenya co-wrote a hit parody song in honor of the Atlanta Braves, which aired on the ABC, NBC, and CBS affiliate television stations and also on a number of major radio stations. As a result, Kenya was featured in numerous newspapers and publications, including Upscale Magazine. During this time, Kenya also modeled professionally, participated in pageants, and worked as a local actress. She was chosen to play a lead role with the Atlanta Workshop Players (AWP) theater group and performed in musicals for several years throughout the state of Georgia as an actress, singer, and dancer. Following her time with AWP, Kenya's talents helped her win a Miss America® Preliminary Pageant (Miss North Central Georgia) and she performed and competed in the 50 th Anniversary of the Miss Georgia competition. Kenya also participated and placed in the top 10 in the Miss Georgia USA® pageant and the Miss Black America Pageant® where she was also named Most Photogenic. During Kenya's reign with the Miss America Organization, she initiated a program called C.H.I.L.D. (Changing How Individuals Learn Develop). Her C.H.I.L.D. program used the creative arts to combat youth violence. As a result of her community involvement and initiative as a role model, she was invited by the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) to sing at the King Center in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the presence of the King family and other dignitaries. Soon after, Kenya became a member of the R&B female group, Rapture and was signed to independent label, Jupiter Records, for several years. Kenya also FrontPage. In October 2005, Kenya was cast as the lead actress in the dramatic musical, "When Sunday Comes, which debuted the first week in January 2006. Kenya holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Georgia State University, an associate's degree in music from the Art Institute of Atlanta, and is currently pursing her master's degree. In 2003, she launched the entertainment and media company, DreamsKept, Inc.
