Summary
This excellent batch of midtempo "cookers" will have you reaching for that dog-eared copy of "On the Road", ready for a jaunt down Route 66. The accent is on swinging, horn-led, classic-era jazz, with fine contributions by saxophonists David "Fathead" Newman, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and Sonny Criss and several breezy organ-jazz numbers by Richard "Groove" Holmes and Big John Patton. Grant Green and Donald Byrd add their brand of high octane, as well. The 51-minute, 10-tune disc makes for a smooth ride; relaxed and unhurried, it has a solid, medium-tempo groove throughout and, given the variety of instrumentation, would make for a nice party once the drive is over. --"Wally Shoup"
