NCP Quarterly Task Force Meeting

On March 31, 2008, Claretian Associates New Communities Program (NCP) hosted the NCP Task Force Quarterly Meeting at the Villa Guadalupe Senior Center from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. Chaired by NCP Director, Jackie Samuel, the meeting was well-attended, with more than 40 persons, representing 30 community organizations, present at the table. Participants reported on their organizations' dedication to one or more of the NCP Task Force strategies to "create an identity for South Chicago that builds connections to our history, our institutions and each other."

On March 13, 2008, the Claretian Associates New Communities Program hosted a South Chicago Artist Meeting at the Villa Guadalupe Senior Center's Community Room. Artists from the southeast Chicago community, and representatives of various community arts and other cultural groups attended this meeting, in which preliminary steps were taken toward initiating collaborative efforts to strengthen the arts presence in this community.

First-ever Southeast Chicago-based "Relay for Life" a Big Hit at Calumet Park

Photo above shows team of cancer survivors who participated in the first ever "American Cancer Society Relay for Life" event to be held in Calumet Park. The "Relay for Life" was an unqualified success, with participants raising $10,000 for use in the fight against cancer. Scheduled to run from 5:00 P.M. Friday, July 11, through 5:00 A.M., Saturday, July 12, the event was actually called off at about 1:00 A.M., when rain and lightning threatened to bring new casualties to the community. Fortunately there were no casualties, other than to the schedule.
