The Story:
It was in 1999 that I first
won an honorable mention for best Original Screenplay at the
Young Performing Arts Festival in San Francisco for my first
screenplay, Foster. I wasn't there to receive the
award, but my friend Matt Chou, nominated twice for best actor
and a bigger winner that night, accepted my award on behalf
of me.
Later, Matt and Lucy Silverstone,
a musician friend and festival attendee, sat down and wrote
a song. At the end of Foster, the title character
gives up his non-Christian girlfriend for God. Matt contemplated
how it must have been like for Foster on the day after, when
he woke up to face the world alone again. With a new life
ahead and so much of his past still lingering in his mind,
Foster was a January man. A man who is living in a new year
and yet still can't quite let go of the past.
The name serves both as a rememberance
to my first work and also as an inspiration to face each project
with a new mindset, a new perspective. Encouragement for myself
never to be complacent but always push my creativity to the
limit.

Appreciation
The Video:
First conceived as a parody of Adaptation, the Charlie
Kaufman film with Nicolas Cage, Appreciation gathered steam
through its development and included comedy segments inspired
by American Idol and emotional scenes inspired by Mike Figgis's
Leaving Las Vegas. It was comissioned for Sisters
Appreciation Night at Harvest South Bay and was shown on April
19th. Appreciation is currently streaming
online and being distributed on CD-ROM.
The Score:
Appreciation utilized several key pieces of Music. First of
which is Koji Tamaki's "Mr. Lonely." The song was
first used in a Japanese soap opera "Konnani Koi no Hanashi"
("This love story") in 1998. Second is Mozart's
famous "O Fortuna," a popular piece of classical
music, usually known for its overwhelming, scary choir vocals.
End credits are rolled over "Fascinatin' Rhythm"
by George Gershwin, this piece came from a Herbie Hancock
CD, "Gershwin's world," and I think it is originally
from the opera "Porgy and Bess."
