Welcome to the online home of Mukyõhõ - The
Boundless Way.
A path to enlightenment through movement and
meditation.
Mukyõhõ is a
distinctly modern interpretation of the Buddha’s
teachings. Practitioners enjoy a modern and
pragmatic approach to practising Buddhism while
retaining a strong connection to centuries-old
Japanese Mahayana Buddhism, yet free of the
superstitions that have built up around it's
practice in Japan.
Bringing
the teachings of pragmatic Buddhism into the 21st
century,
Mukyõhõ
operates under its own authority and is autonomous
and self-directing in its organisation.
Mukyõhõ
is a non-profit organisation
Our
primary aim is to share the practice of meditation,
put into practice the principles of Buddhism, and
explore the fullness of human potential physically,
mentally, and spiritually,
free of supernatural beliefs.
Mukyõhõ
offers instruction in the practices and teachings
of Buddhism through physical exercise and provides
a community that supports practice in everyday
life.
As
Mukyõhõ teaches that anything that one does with
commitment and sincerity, through correct
mindfulness, can be Buddhist practice,
Mukyõhõ
continues to grow and develop.
Quality and intention are what make our practice
much more important.
Buddhism
is a path of wholeness which leads toward increased
self-knowledge, greater knowledge of the world in
which we live, and the realisation of our limitless
potential. Buddhism serves to connect us more
deeply with ourselves and with the universe around
us. Our practice places a strong emphasis on
practice in everyday life and highlights the
important roles that relationships, work, families
and all the ordinary conditions of life have to
play in practice.
Mukyõhõ maintains an ongoing schedule of practice
offered in both English and Japanese including:
taisõ
体操
(stretching exercises);
shikan
止観
(tranquility and insight meditation);
budõ
武道
(martial exercises);
hõza
法座
(open Dharma discussion and problem solving)
samu
作務
(physical work; cleaning, gardening etc.)
It must be pointed out that Mukyõhõ is not a
martial art. Our martial exercises use the body as
a path to greater awareness and eventual
enlightenment. There is no competitive element to
our exercises. We do not practice a fighting art,
rather Mukyõhõ embodies the desire for peace and
mutual understanding among all peoples.
Mukyõhõ
offers a reliable and practical Buddhist practice
free of superstition with the methodology of reason
in place of faith so as to enable people to take
responsibility for the full development of their
potential as human beings.
Mukyõhõ
offers guidance and instruction in
Buddhist practice. Practice sessions begin
with
taisõ
stretching exercises, then move onto
shikan
meditation
and finish with
budõ
exercises.
At other times during the week or month
hõza
open
sitting discussions are held. During the year
pilgrimages to famous historical sites and temples
are also undertaken.
With a strong link to the community, our members
also participate in regional festivals, community
gatherings, and neighbourhood meetings and
workshops. Unlike traditional temple based
mendicant monks, our members are in touch with
society and at one with their community.
Mukyõhõ also visits other Buddhist groups and
temples and undertakes open practice with other
groups to build a strong union with other Buddhist
denominations. Investigation into other methods of
Buddhist practice is also
encouraged.
Total
awareness, mindfulness, full immersion in the
present moment, this is the ultimate in life and
the Buddhist way, a path to transcendental wisdom.
Wisdom is, in a sense, both the beginning of the
path and the end, where it assumes an altogether
higher form. The wisdom that lies at the beginning
is a grasp of the Buddha's basic teachings. These
are not rigid articles of faith to be embraced
unquestioningly. The Buddha recognised that truth
cannot be pinned down once and for all. What held
good last year is superseded in the changed
conditions of today. The Buddha's teachings should
be regarded as skilful means for realising the
impermanence of all that is, life just as it is. We
are invited to experiment with the teachings to see
how we can make them work for us, in the context of
our own everyday lives.
The mind creates a world of opposites and
comparisons. We see ourselves as separate from all
around us, holding onto our opinions as if they
were more true and important than anyone else's. We
place a wall between ourselves and others. Through
the practice of Buddhism we come to realize that
the boundaries that we erect are limiting. We come
to break down these barriers and gain a complete
picture, we don't allow our mind to limit our view.
Mukyõhõ (無境法)
translates as The Boundless Way, a Way which is
unique to each one of us and which keeps changing
as the journey unfolds. It is a Boundless Way as it
has no fixed boundaries, nowhere to go and nothing
to discover. Everything you need to know and be is
right here and now. You are here and now, there is
nothing else to be.
The Boundless Way is the Way of awakening, the Way
to free yourself from the dream of separation and
wake up to who you really are - to realise perfect
insight
(hannya
般若).
Gone beyond the conditioned, beyond the
unconditioned,
gone beyond even that distinction, gone beyond
emptiness itself,
and then Awakening.
