Category Image Mac OS 10.3.9 Update

Seemingly the 10.3.9 update broke a lot of java installations. My advice to those planning an upgrade is to ensure you already have the latest java version and updates on your system AND reboot your machine, then run the update. Then read on for the quality check and fix from Apple if your java installation broke during the update...

A message from the Java engineering team:

There have been cases of Java breaking on some systems after performing
upgrade installs from earlier releases to Mac OS X 10.3.9. To see if this is
the problem you are experiencing, open the Terminal application (in
/Applications/Utilities) and type 'java -version'. If you have upgraded to
Mac OS X 10.3.9, and you see the following response when running this
command, then you are affected:

% java -version
Segmentation fault

If you are using a Java earlier than "Java 1.4.2 Update 2", use Software
Update to install that first, then use Software Update to install the
Security Update 2005-002. Your Java should now be working again. You can
confirm this by again typing 'java -version' in the Terminal:

% java -version
java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)

If you have already applied Security Update 2005-002 and are seeing this
problem, you can fix the problem by downloading and re-installing Security
Update 2005-002. Go to
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2005002macosx1034orlat
er.html
> to download Security Update 2005-002.
