Mac OS 10.3.9 Update
Seemingly the 10.3.9 update broke a lot of java
installations. My advice to those planning an upgrade is to ensure you already
have the latest java version and updates on your system AND reboot your machine,
then run the update. Then read on for the quality check and fix from Apple if
your java installation broke during the update...
A message from the Java engineering
team:There have been cases of Java
breaking on some systems after
performingupgrade installs from earlier
releases to Mac OS X 10.3.9. To see if this
isthe problem you are experiencing, open the
Terminal application
(in/Applications/Utilities) and type 'java
-version'. If you have upgraded toMac OS X
10.3.9, and you see the following response when running
thiscommand, then you are
affected: % java
-version Segmentation
faultIf you are using a Java earlier
than "Java 1.4.2 Update 2", use SoftwareUpdate
to install that first, then use Software Update to install
theSecurity Update 2005-002. Your Java should
now be working again. You canconfirm this by
again typing 'java -version' in the
Terminal: % java
-version java version
"1.4.2_05" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment,
Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed
mode)If you have already applied
Security Update 2005-002 and are seeing
thisproblem, you can fix the problem by
downloading and re-installing SecurityUpdate
2005-002. Go to<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2005002macosx1034orlater.html>
to download Security Update 2005-002.--
