WINTERFEST'S NUMBERS SNOWBALL IN SKANEATELES

Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY)
January 30, 2005

Just an hour into the Skaneateles Winterfest on Saturday, Mega Bubble Man had a line of waiting customers.

Rose Keady, 5, of Skaneateles, hugged her sister Emma, 2, as they floated on a makeshift island in a kiddie pool of bubble solution.

The sisters grew wide-eyed as Mega Bubble Man - also known as Jim Livi - dipped his red hula hoop-sized wand into the bubbles and slowly lifted it over their heads, enclosing the girls in a giant bubble. Emma pursed her lips and blew, stretching the bubble forward until it popped.

The bubbles were one of many activities scattered in and around the Skaneateles Community Center at the second annual Winterfest, sponsored by the Sunrise Rotary Club. Proceeds will benefit a number of causes, including homelessness, hunger and polio eradication.

Last year's festival drew about 2,000 people, said John Paddock, club president. Paddock said this year's favorable weather would probably double the turnout.

The mild conditions allowed Paddock to expand the number of outdoor activities. There was a skillet toss and there were Siberian husky sled dogs people could pet. Other activities included snow golf and snowmobile rides, both of which attracted Mayor Charles Major, his son, Patrick, and nephew, Peter.

As for the bubbles, Rose and Emma said they were fun. "I usually only see bubbles this big," Rose said, spreading her hands apart a few inches.

Emma, who will turn 3 on Monday, said it made everything look "bubbly."
