Common Name: Western Grey Kangaroo
Scientific Name: Macropus fuliginosus
Family: Macropodidae
Colour:

The Western Grey kangaroo is light-grey to chocolate above, without a silvery sheen. Both sexes are the same colour. Underneath is bluish-grey. West Australian Western Grey Kangaroos seem to be lighter in colour than their more eastern couterparts.

Form: When hopping, a Western Grey Kangaroo holds its tail high. They have a haired rhinarium, or nose. Males have a strong odour.
Distribution: The Western Grey Kangaroo occurs in southern Western Australia, South Australia, north-western Victoria and south-western New South Wales as well as Kangaroo Island.
Habitat: The Western Grey Kangaroo prefers open forest and woodland as well as tall and low shrubland, heath and farmlands.
Nests: Western grey Kangaroos do not build a nest. They often have a camping place on a ridge that is sheltered from the wind. They have a hip-hole where the ground is pulverised. They also shelter in caves, which are in sandstone country.
Food: Browses on shrubs and bushes. They also eat agricultural crops and pine needle seedlings.
Predators: None.
Human Influence: Permits for harvesting and shooting the Western Grey kngaroo have only been granted in New South Wales and South Australia.
Abundance: The Western Grey Kangaroo is common.
Features: The Swamp Wallaby is mainly nocturnal, coming out at night to feed. It is gregarious. The Western Grey Kangaroo ahs similar biology to the eastern grey Kangaroo, and in some areas their range overlaps and they may be seen in close proximity. Although their range overlaps, no hybrids have been recorded.
