Uglify (v.)
To take something that could otherwise have been
beautiful, pleasant or generally pleasing to the eye and render it hideously
unattractive.
Well-known examples of uglification
include:
(i) The mullet hairstyle that
was so popular in the 1980s, and continues to be so with a small but persistent
number of international
footballers.
(ii) The British
government's efforts to regenerate the country's inner cities and urban
conurbations during the 1960s and 70s (possibly the most extensive programme of
uglification ever attempted).
(iii)
Cher (or Michael Jackson, take your
pick).
Contrary to popular opinion,
uglification is an irreversible process that can only be recovered from by
totally destroying the unfortunate eyesore and starting
again.
