Wyren (n.)A wyren is a bird that is found mostly in urban
or built up areas that has learned to imitate the sound of a warbling car
alarm.
Birds, being natural mimics, can learn and adapt
to many different kinds of calls, each of which is intended to communicate a
particular message, such as ‘I'm over here’, ‘Get off my
land’ and ‘You couldn't just nip down to the park and fetch me a
nice worm, could you?’. Those living in close proximity with humans have
been known to imitate many types of sound, including mobile phones and car alarms.
[In fact, there's a wyren living just
down the street from me —
Ed.]
Not to be confused with a ‘wingtone’, or the increasingly rare ‘Nokia bird’ that inhabits certain regions of the South American rainforest. Posted on Sunday - May 01, 2005 at 01:21 PM |
