Desertification (n.)
What happens when you cut down a large area of
perfectly healthy tropical rainforest with the intention of growing crops,
building houses, grazing McCows, etc. only to find that once the trees are gone,
the whole place turns to dust and sand and blows away.
The Brazilian government has embarked on a
massive programme of desertification much to the dismay of most of the developed
world, who are suffering from an acute case of ‘forest envy’ after
having cut down most of the trees in their own
countries.
Pronounced
‘DEZ-ert-if-ication’, and not to be confused with
‘dessertification’.
