Wingtone (n.)

Any bird that has learned to imitate the sound of a ringing phone.

The most commonly sighted species of wingtone employs the familiar ‘burrr-burrr’ call, although more exotic and original variations have also been reported. Polyphonic wingtones, however, have yet to be sighted in the wild, and this would probably require a major development in avian evolutionary biology, although leading scientists are sharply divided on the issue.

Cf. ‘wyren’ and ‘Nokia bird’.
