Nokia bird (n.)
An extremely rare and now practically extinct
South American mina bird whose mating call resembles the ring tone of a Nokia
mobile phone.
Contrary to popular belief, the Nokia ring tone,
and indeed the name of the telephone company itself was in fact copied from this
incredibly gentle, intelligent and beautiful woodland creature rather than, as
is more commonly thought, the other way round. Unfortunately, and with no small
amount of irony, the Nokia bird has been driven almost to extinction by the
widespread popularity of its namesake, which proved to be so irritating that
many South American natives and foreign tourists felt compelled to drive into
the forest and shoot as many of the little blighters as they could lay their
hands on, since during the mating season, every time one of them opened its tiny
little beak, everyone within a five mile radius immediately reached into their
pockets to see if their mobile phone was
ringing.
Eventually, the South American
authorities stepped in to put a stop to this cruel and unfortunate practice, and
large regions of the Amazon rainforest are now designated non-Nokia phone using
areas, with the exception of certain motorways, petrol stations, and branches of
McDonald's fast food restaurants operating in the region.
