Normalism (n.)
A deep fear and resentment of people who appear
on the surface to be perfectly normal and unremarkable in every way, but that
one suspects of harbouring some dark and unpleasant secret, such as having human
body parts stored in the freezer compartment of their refrigerator at
home.
Normalism is often the result of overcoming a
‘normality delusion’, leading the sufferer to conclude that if there
is no such thing as normal, then everybody must be deeply strange and peculiar.
This must be especially true of those people who
appear
to be entirely normal and hence, given that such appearances cannot be genuine
as there is no such thing as normal, must be putting on some kind of act
intended to fool the unwary, and therefore must have something
really
nasty to hide. Or so the thinking
goes.
Those suffering from chronic
normalism may go so far as to eschew all contact with people that appear to be
suspiciously normal, sometimes leading to unexpected tirades of verbal abuse to
complete strangers, such as ‘Get out of my way, I don't want anything to
do with your evil, twisted ways, you dirty rotten stinking
normal!’.
