Gift vapour (n.)
An invisible aura of goodwill and friendship that
surrounds gifts, presents, cards, and—more controversially—the
ideas
of those things, that gives rise to the saying ‘It's the thought that
counts’.
The existence of gift vapour is a hotly debated
topic amongst quantum cosmologists as it is thought that this might be the
source of the missing mass of the universe. This was previously thought to
reside in a mysterious substance known as ‘dark matter’, but that
was later found to have been made up by a mischievous PhD student as a
joke.
The term ‘gift
vapour’ may also be used euphemistically as in the following
exchange:
“What are you getting
Bill for his 45th?”
“Well,
he didn't get me anything for my birthday, so I think I'll be giving him gift
vapour this year.”
“Oh,
that's nice.”
