Mnemonically challenged (n.)
Having a poor, dysfunctional, or completely
inoperative short-term memory.
Mnemonically challenged individuals can often be
observed at parties and other social gatherings where they are likely to forget
your name almost immediately after having been introduced. They will then
typically spend the rest of the evening calling you ‘John’ or
‘Dave’ on the grounds that these are probably the safest two
options, thus avoiding any awkwardness or embarrassment that might be caused by
them having to admit that they have in fact forgotten your name for the third
time running.
Consequently, people
called John or Dave may be completely unaware that such a condition even exists,
and are often pleasantly surprised that nobody seems to have much trouble in
remembering
their
names, which was probably why their parents called them that in the first
place.
