Intellectual masturbation (v.)
Any engaging mental activity that is pursued
solely for the self-gratification and pleasure of its active participants that
has no other socially redeeming features whatsoever.
Examples of intellectual masturbation include
chess, crossword puzzles, writing obscure academics papers (or indeed blog
entries) to be published in journals that no-one will ever read, and counting
the number of angels dancing on the head of a
pin.
Cf. ‘musical
masturbation‘—or ‘jazz’, as it is sometimes
known—and sexual masturbation, an extremely healthy and pleasurable
activity that is enjoyed by 98.7% of the human population. The remaining 1.3%
are extremely
tense.
