Delusions of competence (pl. n.)

What one is suffering from when one reaches a state of apparent mastery and confidence in one's abilities to perform a particular job or role in life, and is therefore under the mistaken impression that everything is going swimmingly and will continue to do so for quite some time. Needless to say, it generally doesn't.

People suffering from delusions of competence are generally oblivious to the fact that their current state of affairs is highly transient and could cease to exist at any moment (as could anything in the temporal universe). Instead, they believe that their own skill, ability and general wonderfulness will continue to deliver the same enjoyable state of affairs if not forever, at least until they are bored of it and would like to try something else for a bit of a change.

Unfortunately, such feelings are usually relatively short-lived as they contain within themselves the seeds of their own destruction, and set the poor unsuspecting sufferer up for a particularly nasty fall.

See ‘karmaphobia’ and ‘fallibility glee’.
