MA 102
MA 2 Information: Western terminus is at the NY State Line in W. Stockbridge, MA, eastern terminus is at US 20 in Lee.
History/Facts: MA 102 has been a minor route in the state, connecting the Stockbridges with Lee. Apparently at one point the MA 102 designation was given to a piece of freeway from W. Stockbridge to Stockbridge, but I'm not sure about the details of that road except for what is shown on the Masspike history page. How long did it go? When was it built? We may never know. It exists now as part of the Masspike.

Behind this fence is the old end of the Masspike, currently used for maintenance and jersey barrier storage.

An abandoned truck stop near the NY border.

Another old speed sign, this time not even on its original holes.

This sign's seen better days.

MA 41 guide signs. If you turn right here instead of left, you'll be on old MA 41 before the Turnpike was built.

General road shot.

I have no clue on the age of this one, so I won't even make a guess. It looks like it's been hit, as it was leaning over at a considerable angle.

About 1/8 of a mile till the center of Stockbridge. Definitely not standard - town installed?

Guide signs for the US 7 junction.

A tenth mile marker for MA 102.
Westbound: Lee/Stockbridge/W.Stockbridge

This is probably the furthest east NYS Thruway trailblazer ever.

Guide signs for MA 183. If you go north at this junction, you'll see the MassPike, with conspicuous clearings... this would be the area where you see the "old 102 bypass" end on the Masspike historical section.

This is coming from 183, but I'm not making a page for it. Coming north (not south), there's an arrow for the NYS Thruway, but no shield. Someone stole it maybe.

Oldish 102 marker.

General road shot in Stockbridge.

Near the W. Stockbridge junction of 41 and 102.

The problem with this is that you won't be on the MassPike WB if you go straight, but rather the NYS Thruway, since Exit 1 at W. Stockbridge is a half interchange - you can only head eastbound. If you're going west, you have to drive another four miles or so into Canaan, NY to get on exit B3.

Turn left here to continue on 41.

Very old speed sign.

An old embossed directional sign.

Oldish Mass state shields, a Mass DPW vintage I-90, and another NYS Thruway shield.

Turn left to head to NY State.

Welcome to the Empire State. This road is not NY 102 as it crosses the border; it is reference route 980D.

The following photos are all in New York on NY 22 north. This is the sign you see on any state roads as you head into New York state.

The NYS Thruway Berkshire spur as seen from the nearby NY 22. B3 is the junction right past the MA/NY border. Notice the difference between the NYS and Massachusetts ground signage.

On NY 22.

More on NY 22. You can see the bottom sign has "Second Right" patched over whatever was there before. I wonder what was there before. As you enter the eastbound Thruway, you'll notice that the 980D reference route overpass is marked at "Route 102," even though it is technically not Route 102 in New York state.
Done? Return home.
