2005 Boston Road Enthusiasts Meet

On Friday, June 3, 2005, a bunch of road enthusaists from the northeast (myself included) met up at Joe's American Grill in Woburn, MA for a meetup. Unfortunately, due to my error of omitting a 3 from the address when making directions, I wound up being late and missing dinner. Fortunately, I did not miss the most interesting part of the trip, which was meeting several fellows that I had only previously emailed or communicated on misc.transport.road with. Fellows like Doug Kerr, Steve Anderson, Lou Corsaro, and other fellows I can only remember by internet alias. I'll link to their photo pages when they post them, as some were more thorough than I.

Now let's get on with the pics.

A quick stop at a mall off of route 2, where had I-695 been built it would have ran right on top of it.

That is indeed a 1/10th mile marker. This is on MA 16, eastbound, I think, so 51 miles westward to Webster, MA.

The Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge.

A gem of an old US 1 shield. Oddly enough, it's the same sign as in this photo.

Big Lou! Requested by Lou Corsaro.

The fun stuff. We decided to tresspass and investigate the unfinished I-95 junction to the US 1/MA 60 rotary in Lynn, MA. This here is a ramp from the rotary to the northbound road.

Looking eastward, this is the northbound right of way. The roadway is used to "store" (using the term loosely) of granite, rubble, beer bottles, etc.

Looking north towards the swamp, this is the exit ramp to the rotary from the southbound road.

Looking southbound towards the bridges.

Looking at the split for the bridges - the two roadways from the bridges join to form one road that would probably have been divided by barrier.

Looking on the southbound bridge. These bridges were built in 1956 and are some of the only paved areas.

The southbound exit ramp to the rotary. Fenced off, although why any car would try to drive up it beats me - it's facing opposite the flow of traffic.

Looking up the ramp.

Looking down the road.

Looking down the southbound exit ramp.

Looking at the end of the ROW. The soutbound side is covered in rubble. Beyond the fences, the ROW is cleared for a while, until it eventually disappears into the swamp.

At this point, we noticed that a pair of Mass State Police cruisers got together in a nearby parking lot. Not sure if we were being paranoid or what - did someone tell on us or was it mere coincidence? After hanging around for a while, we decided to leave, and the staties didn't bother us at all when they left. Had they did, they would have probably thought we were insane (a group of grown men taking pictures of an abandoned road? It's not that crazy).

This is on 128 south near Woburn. Exit what? Sorry for the blurriness.

Done? Return home.
