Interstate 391

I-391 Information: Southern terminus is at I-91 in Springfield, MA. The Eastern terminus is at High Street in Holyoke.

History/Facts: I-391 is a short spur off of the right angle curve of I-91 as it crosses the Connecticut. It was built in the early 1980s, and it would have opened sooner had not a large supply of steel been stolen from a construction site. It connects downtown Holyoke and Chicopee with the rest of I-91, making a quick shortcut to Springfield without having to navigate US 5. At 4.4 miles, it is Massachusetts' second shortest 3 digit interstate.

Northbound: Springfield/Chicopee/Holyoke

The split of 391 from 91N. At this point, 91 turns sharply left to cross the Connecticut.

An aging gantry (and one of the few on 391). This signage hasn't been updated to the new MassHighway style with the button copy interstate numerals yet.

Notice how different 391's shields are from 291's - this mostly due to the fact that 391 was built fifteen years later.

Note the green painted elbow foundation. Can't recall seeing one of those before.

391 has pretty good signage. No glaring misakes or stupidities.

I had forgotten to take a picture of going underneath the masspike northbound, but it's right before this sign.

A routine exit.

Now, why didn't they just build this on to the overpass?

Talk about making signs as efficient as possible.

Thank you, sign. It should have "Holyoke Exits," though. Note the funny Chicopee river crossing sign next to the arm pole.

Nice warning for the road ending, but there wasn't a sign like MA 57/I-291 for the terminus for this road.

Not much to say about these ones.

If you chose to go straight to High Street (which should be exit 7), you'll hit the terminus of the expressway.

This is the terminus of I-391N at Resnic Boulevard/High Street.

Done? Head soutbound or Return home.
