The Matrix Decoded

Although the Matrix was not intended to be simply a parable about Christ or the any other religious figure, there are many parallels between the movie and the Christian, Jewish, and Buddhist scriptures, as well as many others. When asked how many hidden messages are in the Matrix, the Wachowski Brothers said, "There are more than you'll ever know."

This website will focus mainly, although not entirely on those within the Judeo-Christian scriptures and the Christian life.

I am not one of those people who watch movies over and over and over again, nor am I the type of person who gets wrapped up in a movie. The Matrix, however, I watch often and incorporate into my speech, my thoughts and my ministry. By the time you are finished skimming through this site you will understand why.

IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE, THIS SITE WILL SPOIL IT FOR YOU! If, however, you have seen it and didn't understand the plot, much less notice anything that resembles a parable, check out the section called What is the Matrix in the Movie?? Once you understand the movie itself, you'll be able to concentrate on the extra fun bits!

The movie was written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, the Wachowski brothers, and I refer to them throughout the site. They wrote the movie as a trilogy, so the 2 movies to follow this one (The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolution) are not sequels, they are simply the rest of the story.

This site is a compilation of several papers I've written. The information came from many discussions, web sites, and personal, ah, opinions. (Try not to think in terms of right and wrong!) The main sites I used in studying The Matrix include, The Matrix - A Cyber-Punk Parable, Neo/Christ Literary Refs in The Matrix, and Matrix Fans.Net. There are many other sites (including a Philosophy section on the official movie site) and discussion lists that I have read and been a part of and I have spent a great deal of time discussing the movie with other fans or poor, unsuspecting and trapped students in the ministry my husband and I run. muwhahaha. I try to give credit where credit is due by using techie footnotes (hold your mouse over the number and the footnote will appear...Links do not always go to another site.) If you find your own stuff here and I don't give you credit, let me know and I'll be happy to give credit where credit is due. (To the author of 'A Cyber-Punk Parable,' I would love to give you credit by name, but I couldn't find your name listed on the site.)

There are several pages dedicated to specific items. Decoded!, however is a scene by scene discussion of the movie as a parable of Christ. I mention other religions more in passing than anything because I am not as familiar with them, however I hope to add to the site as I learn more about the religions that the writers took their ideas from. I'd love to hear your comments, though, so feel free to email me.
