The Matrix Decoded

Chapter 9- Down the Rabbit Hole

DVD Script
(fairly close, anyway)

Notes

MORPHEUS: Apoc, are we on-line?

APOC: Almost.

MORPHEUS: Time is always against us. Please, take a seat there.

THOMAS: (To Trinity) You did all this?

Trinity nods.

"Use your time well, for the days are evil." Ephesians 5:16

I think Thomas is asking for a little reassurance that he isn't being made a fool of and that he'll come out of this alive.

MORPHEUS: The pill you took is part of a trace program. It's designed to disrupt your input/output carrier signal so we can pinpoint your location.

THOMAS: What does that mean?

CYPHER: It means buckle up, Dorothy, 'cause Kansas is going bye-bye.

Remember that Thomas is physically asleep in a pod. The pill that he took interrupts his sleep, which interrupts the software program that runs his world. This is the signal that Apoc is searching for. It will lead them to the pod that Thomas is in so they wll be able to rescue him.

When a person trusts in Christ for salvation, he is rescued from the fallen world system [Matrix] by "the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." (Galatians 6:14) Metaphorically, God has also then found [pinpointed] His lost sheep. (Luke 15)

(Mirror scene)

THOMAS: Did you...?

MORPHEUS: Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real?

What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?

THOMAS: This can't be...

MORPHEUS: Be what? Be real?

TRINITY: It's going into replication.

THOMAS: Cold....it's c-c-cold...

MORPHEUS: Apoc?

APOC: Still nothing.

MORPHEUS: Tank, we're going to need the signal soon.

TRINITY: I got a fibrillation!

MORPHEUS: Apoc? Location?

APOC: Targeting... almost there.

TRINITY: He's going into arrest!

APOC: Lock! I got him!

MORPHEUS: Now, Tank, now!

Reflection is used widely throughout the movie and one of the important moments is here. When Thomas first looks into the cracked mirror, he sees his projection of what he believes himself to look like.

As that image binds to him and begins to cover him, he begins to wake up in his pod, becoming real for the first time.

When he sees himself in the 'doctorbot,' he is getting his first look at the surface reality. His glimpses into the deeper truths will come soon enough.

As he 'goes into arrest,' Thomas dies to his oldself, making way for Neo to be born.

When we trust Christ for salvation, God considers us to be 'crucified with Christ, buried with Christ, and risen/reborn anew with Christ (Romans 6:4-8, Galatians 2:20, Ephesians 2:5-6, John 3:3-8, 16.).

((I'm wondering if perhaps this mirror scene is a hallucination for Thomas...brought on by the pill that he took, or by his imagination trying to grasp what he is learning. No one else seems to notice the mirror healing itself, and nothing quite like this happens throughout the rest of the movie.

On the other hand, perhaps Thomas heals the mirror himself, unaware that he is doing it, unaware of his power over the Matrix and his desire to escape it.))
