The Matrix Decoded

Chapter 8 - Morpheus' Proposal

Morpheus will ask three questions of Thomas, forcing him to accept responsibility for the decisions he is about to make. This is important, because he must realize what he is doing and take the step of faith; faith in Morpheus that he will tell him the truth, faith in himself that he can handle the truth and faith in the outcome of his decisions.

Notes

TRINITY: This is it.

TRINITY: Let me give one piece of advice. Be honest. He knows more than you can imagine.

The black and white tile floor of the hotel is a reference to how clear Thomas' choices are. We, too, have clear choices; we are either with God or against Him. Our decisions are the fruit of that inner choice.

Trinity hints that Morpheus will be a guide for Thomas/Neo; that he has insight or wisdom beyond Thomas' understanding. We must be honest with God because, after all, He knows the truth.

MORPHEUS: At last. Welcome, Neo. As you no doubt have guessed, I am Morpheus.

THOMAS: It's an honor.

MORPHEUS: No, the honor is mine. Please. Come. Sit.

Just like Morpheus, God is delighted to meet us. (Remember the Prodigal Son story in Matthew 21:28-

Just like John the Baptist, Morpheus is honored to meet the one whom he has been searching and waiting for.

MORPHEUS: I imagine, right now, you're feeling a bit like Alice, tumbling down the rabbit hole?

THOMAS: You could say that.

MORPHEUS: I can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accepts what he sees because he is expecting to wake up. Ironically, this is not far from the truth. Do you believe in fate, Neo?

The lionheads on the arms of the chairs are a nice touch...lions are figurative of Yeshua; "...Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has won the right to open the scroll and its seven seals." Rev 5:5

Another reference to Alice in Wonderland, & the sleep/sin/death and wakefulness/salvation/eternal life themes.

THOMAS: No.

MORPHEUS: Why not?

THOMAS: Because I don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my life.

MORPHEUS: I know exactly what you mean.

Yeshua knows how we feel, too...although he is fully God, he was also fully man while on the earth and was tempted, not just in the desert, but at other 'opportune' times, as well.

It is important, too, that Morpheus affirms Thomas' statment as well as his feelings that there is something not right with his world.

MORPHEUS: Let me tell you why you are here. You have come because you know something. What you know you can't explain but you feel it. You've felt it your whole life, felt that something is wrong with the world. You don't know what, but it's there like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?

THOMAS: The Matrix?

MORPHEUS: Do you want to know what it is?

Don't we all feel that there is more to life...that there is something missing?

MORPHEUS: The Matrix is everywhere, it's all around us, even now in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, when you go to church, when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

THOMAS: What truth?

MORPHEUS: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, born into a prison that you cannot smell, taste, or touch. A prison for your mind.

Just like sin, the Matrix surrounds us every moment.

The fun, the excitement, the instant gratification of sin are what blind us from the truth; the truth that we are slaves to sin, born into bondage. "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me." Psalm 51:5 , "...knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin." Romans 6:6)

Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake in your bed and you believe whatever you want to believe.

You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Remember, all I am offering is the truth. Nothing more.

(Thomas takes the red pill with a glass of water.)

It takes faith to cross this final gap. All of the tangible proofs in the world may point the way, but will not solve the problem. Spiritual things are not tangible. Nobody can be saved just by listening to teaching about how to be saved, just as a sick person cannot be healed by only hearing about medicine. The only way to find the truth is to take a step of faith based on inward convictions and outward evidences.

Again, Morpheus offers Thomas a choice. Let's examine them in terms of their colors and presentation.

Blue is associated with night and dreaming, just as Thomas would remain asleep in his pod, living a life that is a dream.

The Blue pill is offered in the left hand, symbolic of something that is backwards or weaker (left-handed compliment, etc.) Yeshua will put the sheep (righteous) on His right side and the goats (the sinful) on His left. (Matthew 25:31-46)

Red is associated with blood, the blood of Christ. The right hand is symbolic of what is just, good, or proper. But red is also symbolic of danger, anger, and Satan, all things Thomas will have to deal with once he has been unplugged from the Matrix.

Thomas accepts the red pill (as a sinner accepts Yeshua's sacrifice) and washes it down with water (symbolic of purity, living water and baptism). (John 4:14; 6:35; 7:38; Ephesians 5:26)

"The idea of the reflection, the two Neo's in Morpheus glasses, is that that represents the two lives that Neo is leading. In the left lens, we see the blue pill and Thomas Anderson, and in the right lens, we see the red pill and Neo," Wachowski brothers.

MORPHEUS: Follow me.

I love this line. It sounds so like Yeshua saying to his disciples, "Follow me."
