| We see Thomas in a monitor and are pulled into the room through it. AGENT SMITH: As you can see, we've had our eye on you for some time now, Mr. Anderson. AGENT SMITH: It seems that you have been living two lives. In one life, you are Thomas A. Anderson, program writer for a respectable software company. You have a social security number, you pay your taxes and you help your landlady carry out her garbage. The other life is lived in computers where you go by the hacker alias Neo, and are guilty of virtually every computer crime we have a law for. One of these lives has a future. One of them does not. |
Televisions and computer monitors are used throughout the movie as forshadowing of shocking news and revelations. Here, the news is that Neo's life is not what it seems as his mouth is molded shut and a bug is inserted into his body. Agent Smith tells Thomas 3 lies. 1. He implies that Thomas' life is real and complete when in fact it is all being feed to him via computer. (John 8:44) But this is only true until he wakes up. Once he is outside the matrix, he will see which life has a future. 2. He also implies to Thomas that the first life he describes is the one with a future, when, in fact, it is the second. |

| I'm going to be as forthcoming as I can be, Mr. Anderson. You are here because we need your help. We know that you have been contacted by a certain individual. A man who calls himself Morpheus. Whatever you think you know about this man is irrelevant. He is considered by many authorities to be the most dangerous man alive. |
3. Agent Smith Morpheus is a dangerous man, although he is, trying to find the One who will save the world; this makes him the biggest threat to the Matrix, so there is a bit of truth in the statement. Morpheus is also more alive than Neo or the agents, so it is interesting that Agent Smith credits him with that. |

| My colleagues believe that I am wasting my time with you but I believe you wish to do the right thing. We are willing to wipe the slate clean, to give you a fresh start and all we are asking in return is your cooperation in bringing a known terrorist to justice. THOMAS: Yeah. Wow, that sounds like a real good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger-- (He does.) THOMAS: And you give me my phone call. AGENT SMITH: Mr. Anderson...you disappoint me. THOMAS: You can't scare me with this Gestapo crap. I know my rights. I want my phone call! AGENT SMITH: Tell me, Mr. Anderson, what good is a phone call if you are unable to speak? |
Satan knows that we must make the choice. He will use any trick in his book, but ultimately it is up to us. |

| AGENT SMITH: You are going to help us, Mr. Anderson, whether you want to or not. (Bug is implanted) |
This scene is a reference to I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream. Again, because Thomas does not know that there is a higher power than the Matrix, he is easily caught up in the lies that he is told. But here he discovers that if he does not reject the matrix, he, by default, chooses it. "Whoever chooses to be the world's friend makes himselg God's enemy." James 4:4 |
