The company Thomas works for is shown as 'Meta CorTex' also spelled Meta Cortechs inside the building. The prefix 'meta' can mean 'situated behind' or 'transending,' and 'cortex' can refer to the cerebral cortex of the brain. Thus 'Metacortex' can mean, "we are the ones behind the scenes, who control your mind".

Rather than a blooper in the movie, many people think it is a play on words...'techs' is slang for 'technicians', so perhaps the sign is referring to the employees.

Another possibility is that Thomas works for a particular department in the company, that department is called the Meta Cortechs, referring to the fact that they are programmers.

THOMAS: Shitshitshit.

RHINEHEART: You have a problem with authority, Mr. Anderson. You believe that you are special, that somehow the rules do not apply to you. Obviously, you are mistaken.

Actually, the rules don't apply to him, but he won't understand that for a while. As a company man, Mr. Rhineheart (isn't a rhine quit bitter?) seems a bit strict in his demands of obedience.

This company is one of the top software companies in the world because every single employee understands that they are part of a whole. Thus, if an employee has a problem, the company has a problem.

The time has come to make a choice, Mr. Anderson. Either you choose to be at your desk on time from this day forth, or you choose to find yourself another job. Do I make myself clear?

THOMAS: Yes, Mr. Rhineheart. Perfectly clear.

"every employee understands that they are part of a whole..." As an individual, you are not important. You are only important in your role as a part of something bigger. While Yeshua tells us that we are part of a body ("so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another." Romans 12:5) he cares for each of us individually, as well. ("Every hair on your head has been counted." Matt 10:30)

The company represents the state of bondage of sinful man to a fallen world as he tries to work his way to heaven. The law is not in Thomas' heart, and he has found himself lacking ability to comply. He is depressed and motionless in his cubicle afterward.

Thomas will have many choices to make. This is only one of them.

(We move to Thomas' cubicle.)

VOICE (O.S.): Thomas Anderson?

THOMAS: Yeah. That's me.

FEDEX GUY: Great. Have a nice day.

THOMAS: Hello?

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Hello, Neo. Do you know who this is?

THOMAS: Morpheus...

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Yes. I've been looking for you, Neo. I don't know if you're ready to see what I want to show you, but unfortunately, you and I have run out of time. They're coming for you, Neo. And I don't know what they're going to do.

THOMAS: Who's coming for me?

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Stand up and see for yourself.

Morpheus helps Thomas to realize the mess he is in...it is a mess he has gotten himself into in many ways.

In the same way, God helps the lost person to see his own sin and sense the spiritual enemy that craves his death. As God warned Cain in Genesis 4:7, "sin is crouching at your door [like the Agents entering the office] it wants you, but you can rule over it."

THOMAS: What, right now?

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Yes. Now. Do it slowly. The elevator.

THOMAS: Oh shit!

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Yes.

THOMAS: What the hell do they want from me?!

MORPHEUS (V.O.): I'm not sure, but if you don't want to find out, I suggest you get out of there.

THOMAS: How?!

"Now" stresses the urgency of the situation. We can not fight Satan, we must escape while God gives us opportunity. (Isaiah 49:8 - Thus says the LORD, "In a favorable time I have answered You, and in a day of salvation I have helped You; and I will keep You and give You for a covenant of the people, to restore the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages.")

MORPHEUS (V.O.): I can guide you out, but you must do exactly what I say.

THOMAS: O.K.

MORPHEUS (V.O.): The cubicle across from you is empty.

THOMAS: But what if they...?

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Go! Now!

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Stay here for just a moment.

Thomas asks questions that, although understandable, are not important at the moment...he is alway seeking to understand, but not always sure exactly what kind of understanding he needs.

For the sinner, there is no alternative; adher to God's way of salvation or face the consequences. (2 Peter 2:9 "...the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation.")

MORPHEUS (V.O.): When I tell you, go to the end of the row to the office at the end of the hall. Stay as low as you can.

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Go. Now.

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Good. Now, outside there is a scaffold.

THOMAS: How do you know all this?

MORPHEUS (V.O.): We don't have time, Neo. To your left there is a window. Go to it. Open it.

MORPHEUS (V.O.): Take the scaffold to get to the roof.

We often experience the same thing with God. He may guide us or give us a glimpse of His will, but often, since we don't see the whole picture, we don't understand why He wants us to do these things. We ask endless questions and beg for clearer guidance, even when we are sure of His will, because it doesn't seem to make sense to us.

We seek to understand Him, even though there are so manu things we can't grasp, so many things we will not, as humans understand.(Matthew 24:42 "Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.")

God will not feed us meat until we are able to digest the milk He feeds us. (1 Corinthians 3:2 "I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it.")

THOMAS: No way, no way, this is crazy.

MORPHEUS (V.O.): There are two ways out of this building. One is that scaffold. The other is in their custody. You take a chance either way. I leave it to you.

Again, Thomas is given a choice...his options are made perfectly clear, and complete confidence is offered, but the ultimate decision and action is entirely up to him.

THOMAS: This is insane! Why is this happening to me? What did I do? I'm nobody. I didn't do anything.

THOMAS: I'm going to die. Shit!

THOMAS: I can't do this!

Thomas is deceiving himself...he isn't 'nobody;' he is, at the very least, a criminal in that he is selling illegal software.

We also see his lack of confidence in himself. Since he believes that he can't do this, he turns power of his future over to the agents. Again, note the resemblance to Doubting Thomas.

Thomas loses his confidence, along with his phone when he looks down...remember the mountain biking story...he isn't looking where he wants to go, he is looking where he fears to go.

"Humanly, this is impossible; but with God everything is possible." (Matthew 19:26)
