Notes

MORPHEUS: We've done it, Trinity. We found him.

TRINITY: I hope you're right.

MORPHEUS: I don't have to hope it. I know it.

Absolute faith. Just as John the Baptist is confident in his declaration of Yeshua as "The Lamb of God" (John 1:29), Morpheus is absolutely certain that Neo is the 'One,' the messiah who will rescue them from the evil of the Matrix.

NEO: ... am I dead?

MORPHEUS: Far from it.

Indeed, Neo is finally alive! For the first time he is truly experiencing what is going on around him, rather than having the Matrix feed him a dream.

DOZER: He still needs a lot of work.

NEO: What are you doing?

MORPHEUS: Your muscles have atrophied. We're rebuilding them.

NEO: Why do my eyes hurt?

MORPHEUS: You've never used them before.

Morpheus closes Neo's eyes and Neo lays back.

MORPHEUS: Rest, Neo. The answers are coming.

After being in the world for so long, we, too need time to build our spiritual muscles. And we, too find it difficult to look around at the sin that we now see surrounding us.

"Unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3). (I Corinthians 1:30). "He who is spiritual appraises all things..." (1 Corinthians 2:4).

Yeshua takes his disciples away from the crowds to rest; a lesson to us that we, too, must take time for rest. (Colossians 1:29, Hebrews 4:10)

NEO: Morpheus, what's happened to me? What is this place?

MORPHEUS: More important than what is when?

NEO: When?

MORPHEUS: You believe the year is 1999 when in fact it is much closer to 2199. I can't say for certain what year it is because we honestly do not know.

There is nothing I can say that will explain it for you, Neo. Come with me and see for yourself.

(The movie was released in 1999, the year of the rabbit in the Chinese calendar. Many people believed that it was the final year of waiting for the return of Yeshua. It was released Easter weekend.)

MORPHEUS: This is my ship, the Nebuchadnezzar. It's a hovercraft.

This is the main deck. This is the core, where we broadcast our pirate signal and hack into the Matrix.

Nebuchadnezzar means, "Nebo, protect the crown" (or the landmark.) Nebo was the Babylonian God of Wisdom.

A different Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon (Daniel 2-5) had a dream that he wanted interpreted, but couldn't remember the details of it. Daniel was able to tell him his dream and interpreted it for him. Later, Nebuchadnezzar is stricken mad and wanders like a beast in the wilderness, until he recovers and accepts God.

The marker states the name of the ship and lists the build as Mark III:11. Mark 3:11 reads, "Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they would fall down in front of him and scream, 'You are the Son of God!'"

Most of my crew you already know. This is Apoc, Switch and Cypher. The ones you don't know; Tank, his big brother Dozer and the little one behind you is Mouse.

The crew represents the church, the body of believers who must rely on each other for support.

Short for apocolypse, Apoc is referred to in one version of the screenplay as the writer of the Four Horsemen computer virus. The word "Apocalypse" refers to "any universal or widespread destruction or disaster," which is what happened during the war between the machines and the human race.

Switch means to connect, or disconnect or, in telecommumunications it is "a network device that selects a path or circuit for sending a unit of data to its next destination." 2

The others will be discussed later.

You wanted to know what the Matrix is, Neo? Trinity.

MORPHEUS: Try and relax.

This will feel...a little weird.

MORPHEUS: This is the Construct. It is our loading program. We can load anything from clothing to equipment, weapons, training simulations. Anything we need.

NEO: Right now, we're inside a computer program?

MORPHEUS: Is it so hard to believe? Your clothes are different, the plugs in your arms and head are gone. Your hair is changed. Your appearance now is what we call your "residual self-image". It is the mental projection of your digital self.

We, too, must deal with 'residual self-image.' Our friends and family will take a long time to accept that our desires, our likes and dislikes, our goals will change the closer we come to God. Even WE will struggle with this adjustment and will marvel as we see the changes that take place in us as a result of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

NEO: This-- This isn't real?

MORPHEUS: What is real? How do you define real? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can taste, smell, or see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.

Like Neo, we often wonder what is real, or truth...are the feelings we feel truth? Or are they are response to truth?

Morpheus mentions that our senses are electrical signals interpreted by the brain...and he is right. There is more to us, however, than these signals and our chemical makeup. We have a soul and can understand truth only through our relationship with God.

To understand what is real, we must find it through the source of reality, God the Father; we must unplug from the Matrix.

MORPHEUS: This is the world you know. The world as it was at the end of the Twentieth Century. It exists now only as part of a neural-interactive simulation that we call the Matrix.

You have been living in a dreamworld, Neo. This is the world as it exists today.

MORPHEUS: Welcome to the desert of the real.

The world that Morpheus shows Neo is a desert.Just like sin, it is desolate and there is nothing living in it.

This line is also from "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream."

We have only bits and pieces of information. But What we know for certain is that, at some point in the early Twenty-first Century, all of mankind was united in celebration. We marveled at our own magnificence as we gave birth to AI.

NEO: A.I.? You mean artificial intelligence?

MORPHEUS: A singular consciousness that spawned an entire race of machines.

AI, meaning 'ruin,' was a city that Israel tried to take. (Joshua 7-10) During their first attack, they were not faithful to God and they were quickly defeated. Joshua prayed and fasted, repenting for the nation and God delivered the city into their hands.

We don't know who struck first. Us or them. But we know it was us that scorched the sky. At the time, they were dependent on solar power and it was believed they would be unable to survive without an energy source as abundant as the sun.

Throughout human history, we have been dependent on machines to survive. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.

"...It was us that scorched the sky."

It was the people who blocked out the light. Just as Adam and Eve first sinned and brought sin between them and the true Light. "In him [Yeshua] was life, and the life was the light of mankind. The ligh shines in the darkness, and the darkenss has not suppressed it." John 1:4-5

The human body generates more bioelectricity than a 120-volt battery and over 25,000 B.T.U.'s of body heat.

Combined with a form of fusion, the machines had found all the energy they would ever need.

There are fields, Neo, endless fields where human beings are no longer born; we are grown.

For the longest time, I wouldn't believe it. And then I saw the fields with my own eyes, watched them liquify the dead so they could be fed intravenously to the living and standing there, facing the the pure, horrifying precision, I came to realize the obviousness of the truth.

What is the Matrix? Control.

The Matrix is a computer-generated dreamworld built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this. (Note the Duracell tone!)

"...the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." 2 Cor. 4:4

NEO: No! I don't believe it! It's not possible!

MORPHEUS: I didn't say that it would be easy, Neo. I just said that it would be the truth.

NEO: Stop! Let me out! I want out! I want out!

NEO: Get this thing out of me!

TRINITY: Easy, Neo. Easy.

NEO: Don't touch me! Get away from me!

NEO: I don't believe it! I don't believe it!

CYPHER: He's going to pop!

MORPHEUS: Breathe...just breathe.

Neo passes out.

Seeing the truth can be hard.

We often spend a great deal of our lives and our energy ignoring the truth, denying that the 'truth' the world tells us is not true and will only lead us further and further into heartache and, ultimately, eternal death.

Instinctively, we know there is something better, but as long as we are searching for answers without God, we only find more questions.
