Tue - April 15, 2008 A Fish Tale...and some Stuffing
Lately we've been hearing a lot of odd bumps and
bangs and screeching under the house. Bernoulli loves it...of course, it's
cats. Several, although there is one in particular that has taken up residence
under the house and sometimes on the back porch.
It drives Bernoulli wild. He runs all over the
house sniffing (snorfling) at every nook and cranny and A/C vent on the bottom
floor. He tries to get under the bed in the bike room because we can hear them
through that vent really well and he generally just makes a fool of himself
whining and snorfling.
Last night Chad decided to let him under the house to run the cats out of there. (They aren't OUR cats...WE didn't fail to fix and/or neuter our pets.) So he grabbed a leash and led Bernoulli out to the side of the house where the skirting is missing and turned him loose. Of course, there are other places where the skirting is loose enough that the cats are using them as alternate doors, so, of course, Bernoulli chased one out and spent the next couple of hours, we thought, chasing cats. Apparently, though, he found some fish. Dead, rancid fish. And rolled in it. So he comes in, all proud of himself and feeling cocky at almost 11 o'clock, which is our bedtime and not only is he filthy but he REEKS. So it's into the tub for him. We both got in with him...I washed his front half and Chad washed his back and hind quarters. By the time we were done he was so tired from his spectacular adventure that he was laying down in the water - a first as he doesn't like baths. Then we got him out and dried him off a bit and let him out of the bathroom. At that point, of course, he was all riled up and running around trying to get the other dogs to play with him and all we can think of is can we lock him out of the bedroom so we can sleep or would we be courting disaster? Obviously it would be the later, so we decided that we would leave the crates open so Bernoulli could find a warmer place to lay until he dried off. But if he's out of his crate, then Murray has to be, too, so all 4 dogs spent most of the night in beds that weren't theirs. Bernoulli took over Murray's crate, Murray took over Max's pillow, Max got the floor and Cooper, well, he guarded his blanket. Did you notice I said 'most' of the night? What about the rest of the night? Well, I'm so glad you asked, because the story isn't complete without Murray making an appearance. Remember he's on Max's pillow...well, apparently that pillow wasn't dead, yet, because Murray had to kill it and rip out its insides. I woke up at 4 o'clock with stuffing all over the room. At that point everyone got herded back to the crates (Bernoulli, of course, was in his already...he just can't sleep any place but his own bed for very long.) Chad had the mess mostly cleaned up by the time I got up this morning. Fortunately, most of the stuffing is back in the pillow and I can sew it up for Max so he can have his bed back. Murray is doomed now to spend the rest of his life sleeping in his crate, which I told him while he licked my hand and ignored me. Mon - November 13, 2006 Growing Family
Well, this weekend we added to our family. We adopted a pup from the Humane
Society.A few weeks ago, if you haven't heard, one of our
students found a puppy and asked us if we'd keep him for the week. We did,
naming him Murray. She took him home that weekend and her
parents declined, so we took him back. After another week of deciding if we
wanted more puppies we decided that, yeah, he can stay. And he needs a
playmate. So we adopted Bernoulli. Bernie for
short.
Their personalities couldn't be more different. Murray is so play minded that you can barely pet him without him trying to chew on you. He spent the first 2 weeks with us nipping at the older boys, trying to get them to play. He's stubborn, but responds to a little firm handling. Press on his hind quarters a bit and he sits. Murray is such a people puppy that if he sees someone 2 blocks away he wants to go visit. Completely forgets he had to pee...people are so much more fun. Bernie is shyer. People are ok, but he wants a few minutes to get used to the idea. People on the other side of the street aren't even in his world. Once he gets used to you, though, he thinks you're the greatest. He's soft and fluffy and wants to be handled and petted all the time. He doesn't bite and rarely licks, but he is also a '2-stander'...he's always putting his big soft paws up on my thigh so he can get closer to my hand. Very sweet, but that'll have to stop. He's probably going to be 80lbs or more when he's grown and he'll knock me over. He's stubborn in a little different way than Murray. Press on Bernie's hindquarters and the last thing that enters his mind is sitting..."I'll be damned if I'm going to do that. Stop pushing!" But when you stop trying to force him, he just might do what you want. Or not. He spent last night (his first night with us) investigating the room we were in and occasionally sniffing one of the other dogs, but wasn't really interested in playing with anyone. He's also a toy hog. Just takes whatever Murray has and then growls if he tries to take it back. Murray got used to his crate pretty quickly. He still whines and barks a little before he goes to sleep, but usually he's just barking at his pillow to, I guess, tell is who's boss or something. Bernie, so far, doesn't mind the crate when the door is open, but we discovered last night that he's quite a talker. He whines once or twice, then moves to something between a howl and a bark that seriously sounds like he's talking. We're not sure what he's saying, yet, but it sounds like he's lonely and sad and wants his mama. Murray follows the big boys where ever they go, so moving up and down the stairs or taking them to the dog run is (was) pretty easy. Bernie isn't that interested in the dogs. He's more interested in his surroundings. Murray is now so interested in Bernie that he lets the others get away from him. Which is probably good for Max, but Cooper is a little sad. Cooper has decided that Murray is fabulous fun. They've started running and wrestling together...Cooper is so gentle with him and doesn't run too far before turning around, since Murray can't keep up...it's really cute. We were thrilled with that, but this morning he's protecting Murray, who doesn't want protection, from Bernie, who is finally deciding that playing with Murray might be fun. Cooper doesn't seem to realize that the growling they are doing is playful. It's really adorable, but I hope it doesn't last too long. Anyway...We don't have pictures of them, yet, but the pic to the left is similar to Bernoulli! |
