My Desk

I just finished installing a new computer for a staff member and am jealous of her nice clean desk.

I mean, I don't have a LOT on my desk, but it doesn't look as neat as I want it to.

Let's see...there's the plant my husband gave me for our anniversary (it has a fishy in it...he's very hardy; my subconscious attempts to starve him to death have done little to discourage him from thriving.)

Then there's the phone stand/phone/phone books...a necessity, of course. Along with the post-it notes, the 'while you were out' pad and the pen that stay by the phone stand.

I also have an Apple lunch box on my desk...I hide my gum in it to keep it away from the mouse that our resident cat hasn't bothered to catch. You can see how it, too is a necessity.

Then there's the can of Mountain Dew in a cozy that is always present. And the box of Puffs tissues. And the little planter with the alien head 'stress ball' in it. Must haves. Obviously.

Then there's the little holder for my business cards. Now, really...why is that here? I know who I am...anyone in my office obviously HAS the info, so what's the point of that? That is going in my drawer. No, it's full...ok, the other drawer. Yeah...ok.

Oh, and the little thing of fish food...I'd never feed him if I didn't see that occasionally.

The worst thing is all the cords on my desk. There's the keyboard cord, the mouse cord, the Ethernet cord, the power cord and the speaker cord. All going to the laptop on my desk. Oh, except the speaker cord now goes to my iPod, which is also on my desk. Not to mention the phone cord and the phone handset cord.

And the miscellaneous things...the current issue of Macworld, the knife I used to spread my PB&J this afternoon, the zip disks I need to give my boss, the maps of the buildings that we've just updated...and 5 sticky notes from the state reports that I've never thrown away.

All of this doesn't even mention the mess on my side-desk...the one with the Windblows machine on it. That desk is cluttered, too, although not as badly.

OK...so I've re-thought my priorities. Why is my phone be on my main desk, anyway? I don't want to talk to people, they only call when they have a computer problem; I'll just move that and all it's peripherals off...that opens up a big area. The sticky notes go in the trash...except this one. I need this one. The knife goes in the kitchen; the Macworld goes home with me for the evening and then to my coworker; the maps...well, the maps will stay where they are. But, hey! I can see the desk top again! Whoo-hoo!
