Every year from mid-May to mid-June the alewives make their run from the salt waters of
Damariscotta River and the Great Salt Bay, up the fish ladder at Damariscotta Mills, and into the
fresh waters of Damariscotta Lake. These anadromous fish come in by the tens of thousands,
making a feast for osprey, eagles, and gulls. These photos were taken June 11 - 14, 2007
showing the osprey soaring, hovering, diving, and catching the alewives with their sharp talons. It's
quite a show!
All photos taken with a Canon EOS 5D digital SLR, a 500 mm IS lens with 1.4x teleconverter, a
Gitzo 1325 tripod with Wimberley head, and shot from the Rte 215 bridge at Damariscotta Mills.
