breakfast for loon chick

Keith Carver

Our loon chick hatch this year was on June 18, 2007.  The nest was on the south side of Bryant's Island,

Damariscotta Lake, Maine, not far from our cabin.  This website is a collection of 20 close-up photos,

beginning with a late-day June 18 image of the nesting loon with a chick barely visible under wing.   Late

on June 19 the loons moved from the nesting area to a nearby rocky shore to the west of Bryant's Island.

The other photos were taken early on June 20, and show an interesting sequence with the parents feeding

the chick.

These photos were taken with a Canon EOS 5D digital SLR camera, a 500 mm IS lens with a 1.4X

teleconverter, a Gitzo 1325 tripod with Wimberley head, and shot from a boat.
