April 13, 2006. Altar under construction in my wood shop. Unfinished cherry panel
(glued-up boards, sanded and trimmed) forms the altar top and is attached to a poplar
structural frame.
April 14. Measure twice, cut once! Preparation for final edge trim of cherry top using a
router.
April 14. Clamps keep the top aligned with the structural box, while routing the edge.
April 15. Front, side and rear cherry rails attached to the structural frame. It took a LOT
of patience and care to get those mitered joints right...
The side boards are mechanically fastened to the frame, using steel threaded inserts
and 1/4-20 machine bolts. After alignment, the miters come together!
April 15. This shows some of the machine bolts that hold the side rails in place. There
were about 40 bolts used to fasten all four rails.
