The
Quabbin Reservoir is located in western Massachusetts and is one of
the largest man-made public water supplies in the United States. It
was created in the 1930's by damming the Swift River. It is
18 miles long, has 181 miles of shoreline, and when full holds 412
billion gallons of water. Due to a very wet fall and winter, the Quabbin
was completely full in January 2006 so that the spillway was running
high and fast along its entire length. This is a rare event, happening
on average about every 30 years. So the spillway photos are especially
unusual.
These
photos were taken January 24, 2006 near the Winsor Dam, an earthen impoundment
on the south end of the reservoir. All images were taken with
a Canon EOS 20D digital camera, most with a 17 - 40 mm zoom lens.
