A pilot car. Specifically a Pilot Car Escort Vehicle according to the State of Colorado. We'll refer to them as PCEV's.
A PCEV, simply put, escorts oversize loads. Oversize loads can be anything from a manufactured/mobile home to giant pieces of machenery. Depending on the size of the load and the roads to be traversed, PCEV's may be required in front of and/or in back of the oversize load. In Colorado, if the load is over 16'6" high, there must be a PCEV in front of the load with a height pole set to the height of the load being escorted, so the load doesn't strike any overhead objects and cause expensive and extensive damage.
Now the mission of a PCEV operator is a little more complicated than what the job description entails. Safety should always be the number one concern of the PCEV operator: safety of the public, followed by the safety of the oversize load operator and the PCEV operator(s), followed by the safety of the highway system and the actual load itself. The PCEV operator should also try to reduce any unreasonable delays to the normal flow of traffic, and of course help to reduce insurance premiums.
