How's the Writing Going, Christina???
Why it is now safe to ask.
So, it's Thanksgiving and my husband's grandma
makes the mistake of asking the question I've been hearing for weeks
now:
"So how's the writing going,
Christina?"
She means how's the writing
going for my forthcoming book, Writer
Mama. Almost no one ever asks me how my
article-writing is going. Except a few kindred souls, who understand that
writing is great when it's going well and it sucks when it isn't. At least I
think they understand that...it's possible I am the only one who feels this
way.
It wasn't so much that I was in
the second category, it was more that I was home alone with Samantha for four
days and doing basically no writing. Julia Cameron was right, a writing writer
is a happy, fun-to-be-around kind of person. A non-writing writer, on the other
hand, if even for a few days, can be a cantankerous son of a
gun.
Through gritted teeth I told her
that I would love to talk about anything except how my writing was going. I
could feel the tension fog the phone
line.
Did I mention this was on
Thanksgiving? Geez, relax for a day, will ya
Christina?
Actually, I'd been working
on an article for "Country Sampler" for about a week, and I was more like book,
what book??? But that's just me. When I am in a project, I am in it. Sometimes
my writer friends make it sound so easy to juggle multiple projects. Like la,
la, la, I need to make a certain number of dollars per day and in order to do
that I need to work on several articles at a
time.
That is so nice for them. I can't
do it. I am more often a one project at a time kind of girl. However, I do enjoy
juggling some of my personal projects with assignments, like say, this blog or
my newsletter Writers On The Rise or maybe a little Web site building or
marketing.
For me, that's the fun
stuff. That's the candy.
And when the
writing is going well, like it is now. I can talk about it. But ask me next
week, "How's the writing going, Christina?" and don't be surprised if you hear a
giant pause followed by a sigh followed by some grumbling followed by some
question-dodging.
I've got miles to go
before my May 1st deadline...but today, the writing is going very well. Thanks
for asking.
