2005 ScheduleÑSix-Week Classes Begin On Wednesdays:
Spring: April 20th
Summer: July 20th
Fall: September 7th
What if writing and publishing were a natural extension of the life you are already living? In this e-mail course, you will learn how to kick off a part-time career as a freelance writer by writing and submitting articles on topics you love. By the end of our six weeks together, you will learn how to write the four most marketable types of nonfiction articles--personal essays, how-to articles, interviews and profiles--all in your spare time. Emphasis will be placed on brainstorming a supply of ideas, finding your unique voice and style, integrating research, targeting publications, and polishing drafts to satisfy editors. Weekly check-ins will help you move beyond the inertia of writer's block. Questionnaires and exercises break down mysterious processes into manageable steps and encourage you to develop necessary skills. The first three weeks focus on writing across a variety of styles; the second three weeks focus on choosing a manuscript to polish and submit.
Course includes a 222-page copy of "Rhapsody in Writing, An Eclectic Collection, 2001-2004," samples of former students' and the instructor's published work, as well as the class workbook, which is e-mailed one chapter at a time over six Wednesdays. Participants work independently, sending in weekly updates and sharing evolving drafts with the instructor and fellow students. Course includes two detailed manuscript evaluations at weeks three and six as well as lots of encouragement and support throughout all six weeks. The cost for the class is $140.00.
